"MP3 Converter" extension opens the conversion window when the toolbar button is pressed. In this window, you can perform all your conversion jobs. Simply use the browse button to point the extension to the media files and wait for the conversion(s) to finish. The extension automatically downloads the converted files to the default download directory of your browser. If you need to adjust the conversion bitrate, you will need to do it before the dropping files step as the conversion takes place automatically. This extension supports dropping text content too. It will extract all the links in the dropped content (HTML or Text formats are supported) and converts media files after fetching the resources from their servers. The extension does the MP3 conversion without any server interaction. It is a fully offline conversion process.

Features

  1. What is the "MP3 Converter" add-on and how can I use it?

This extension is a full-featured MP3 conversion tool that is written in pure JavaScript which means it can perform MP3 conversion without any server-side interaction. Basically, this extension only has the MP3 encoder part and depends on your browser's power to decode any audio or video streams that the conversion is requested for. Basically, the extension asks your browser to decode the user's audio or video to get the raw data. Then converts this raw audio stream into the MP3 format with the user requested bitrate. Note that since the conversion relies on the decoding capability of your browser, hence the extension cannot convert those media formats that your browser is not able to play! fortunately decoding power of browsers is improving every day and they have already supported frequently used video and audio formats

  2. What's new in this version?

    Please check the Logs section.

  3. How can I feed the audio and video files?

There are many ways to provide the extension with the input media files. You can click on the dashed section once to open the default file manager and select multiple media files. Or you can simply drop the local media files into the dashed area. This extension also extracts URLs from text input. So if you drop a piece of text content into the dashed area, the extension extracts all URLs from this content and then checks the server's response for each URL. If there is a media mime type associated with this URL, then the content will be fetched and conversion will take place, otherwise, an error is displayed next to the URL. Note that by default the extension does not have permission to the external servers so it will request the permission for each server once it is needed.

  4. Why do I get server access permission, each time I ask for a remote resource conversion? Is there any way to stop these permissions?

For user security, this extension does not have any external access to any remote server what so ever, so when a remote resource is given, it needs to get the user's permission to be able to validate the external resource and to download the resource from the server. These permissions are requested once for each domain. If you don't want to get bothered each time, you can press the global permission button in the UI once which gives the extension access to download any external resource from now on. To disallow this loose permission, you can remove and re-install the extension one more time.

  5. Why do I get "unable to fetch" error when I drop a link into the UI in Firefox browser?

In Firefox, the permission system is not working properly at the moment, so when the extension needs to get the permission from user to access the external server to fetch the media file, this permission is not shown to the user and hence the extension is not able to get the resource! You can either download the resource locally and then drop it into the UI or give the extension the global permission as explained in the related FAQ.

  6. Can I cancel a conversion request?

Yes, simply press the close button in the right side of each job to destroy the job. If the job is in the downloading stage, then the connection gets aborted and if it is in the middle of the MP3 conversion process, the associated worker gets killed.
