FAQs

  1. What's new in this version?

See our version history page at the Firefox add-ons site for details about this update.

  2. What is Security Plus?

Security Plus is a free virus, malware scanning service powered by VirusTotal's Public API.

  3. Is there a way to increase my protection even more?

Yes, there is a blog post on blog.add0n.com which I recommend to take a look at, http://blog.add0n.com/2015/05/16/tracker-and-script%20blocker-extensions-for-firefox.html

  4. How does Security Plus work?

After installation, a new item will be appended to your context menu whenever a link is selected. By clicking on the item, a bar appears in the page to inform you about the progress of submission of the link to the VirusTotal service. After a while you will get informed about the results of virus scanning.

  5. Why is Security Plus not working after installation?

After successful installation, an item is appended to the right click context-menu over links. If the item is attached but Security Plus is still not working, most likely you have forgotten to refresh the page once after installation. Please note that the refresh is not required anymore for Security Plus 0.1.3 onward only in Firefox browser.

  6. What is the meaning of "Failed, exceeded the request rate limit" error message?

Security Plus uses VirusTotal as the virus scanning engine. VirusTotal only allows 4 scans per minute. If you get the exceed rate limit error, you need to wait for about a minute before requesting a new scan. Security Plus is designed to handle the rate limit internally, however, after installation or activation the error might occur as the history of the last scan is not available anymore.

  7. After installation there is no item in the right click context-menu. Anyway to fix this?

Please note that the item is only appended to the context-menu for right-click over links. If still you cannot see the item appended, please try the extension on a clean profile, http://blog.add0n.com/2016/01/30/how-to-use-firefox-profile-manager.html to make sure this is not a compatibility error. Also you can report the problem by opening a new bug report on the GitHub repo or adding a comment in the comment section of this page.

  8. How to install the extension from source (XPI file)?

The executable files are available in the GitHub repository under "src.safariextension/executables" directory. Based on your browser select the proper executable and drag & drop it into your browser.

  9. How can I uninstall Security plus on Firefox?

If you wish to uninstall or disable Security Plus, please follow the instruction on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/disable-or-remove-add-ons.

Editorial Review

While your antivirus program may provide quick checking of emails and scripts as you browse the web having an extra level of security that takes very little memory can actually help to prevent a disaster or an infection as you browse through various URLs. Security Plus is a second-tier of protection available to users that can provide free checking of any URL for viruses and concerns. Security Plus offers substantially better security protection than you might receive from any type of antivirus on the market today because it utilizes 64 different antivirus products at once to check through URL and discover various threats that an antivirus solution may have missed. This is the ultimate backup level of protection that you can use when browsing the web and the best part is it's entirely free.

Security plus is powered by VirusTotal API and it works by scanning for malware viruses and other threats in the background as you continue to browse the web. The process for installation on Security plus takes just a few minutes and it doesn't require any type of restart your computer. As soon as the installation is completed when a link is selected a bar will appear on the page to scan through that new link using the VirusTotal service as you browse the web you can be alerted to new threats on the page that you are viewing so that you can stop browsing and prevent an attack.

Using the VirusTotal API it's possible for security plus to identify a variety of different Trojans, viruses, malware and worms in just a few seconds. The program also maintains consistent updates to monitor for new threats and it will keep a record of malware domain lists that can help to prevent other users from visiting the same sites that may be infected. If you are interested in protecting your computer from a number of malicious threats and you would like a backup for your antivirus system Security Plus is a free and comprehensive system that can be a fine asset to your browser.
